The Buddha once asked his disciples.
“Behold monks, how long do you think is human life?”
One of his disciples replied,
“Human life is vain, dying by illness; it is about a few days long".
“Well, you have not entered the door of Dharma".
Then, the second disciple answered,
“Human life is like dew on a leaf; it is about the length of a meal time".
However, the Buddha responded,
“You still do not understand Buddha Dharma. Who else wants to answer?”
At that time, a disciple stood up and answered,
“Human life lasts only as long as the in-and-out breath".
After hearing this, the Buddha said,
“You at last have a good grasp of the Buddha Dharma!”
Is the human life really between breaths? Breathing is a perfectly natural phenomenon, and the essence of life is the absorbing and releasing of energy. Achieving natural balance in our inhalations and exhalations is, in itself, the truth of the universe and the life of nature.
Through the practice of Anapanasati, we can obtain ten types of wisdom: counting, following, concentration, observation, retrospection, and purity and the four noble truths - the truth of suffering, the truth of the cause of suffering, the truth of the end of suffering, and the truth of the path that leads to the end of suffering. The final goal of the Anapanasati sutra is complete union with the thirty-seven aids to enlightenment as taught by the Buddha. The seven stages corresponds with the thirty-seven paths are below.
Susik (數息, Counting breaths) - Fourfold stage of mindfulness (四念處)
Sangsu (相隨, Following) - Four right efforts (四正勤)
Ji (止, Concentration) - Four basis of magical power (四如意足)
Gwan (觀, Observation) - Five roots of faculties of the body (五根)
Hwan (還, Retrospection) - Five powers (五力)
Jeong (淨, Purity) - Seven factors of enlightenment (七覺支)
Saseongje (四諦, The Four Noble Truths) - The Noble Eightfold Path of Buddhism (八正道)
